You don't need an Advent calendar to know that Christmas is right ahead of you, but opening a little numbered door to reveal a small treat is an idea that many of us – religious or not – are keen to get involved in.
What is Advent?
Advent is the four-week period beginning on the Sunday nearest 30th November, the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle, through to the following three Sundays. The period originally began as a time for converts to Christianity to prepare for baptism, but is now more commonly associated with the lead up to Christmas.
Advent calendars typically don’t follow the period of Advent, instead, they begin on 1st December, then marking the 24 days before Christmas. Nowadays, most Advent calendars include paper doors that open to reveal a small piece of chocolate. Although many of our favourite luxury brands like to begin the countdown in style with calendars packed with lavish mini or travel-sized gifts.
They are a great way to test out items you haven't tried before - and can always be an early Christmas gift for loved ones.
